Timing

Turnaround Time

Typical turnaround time is approximately 4–5 days after drop-off, depending on the number of knives, current workload, blade condition, and whether any correction work is needed.

Kitchen knife sets, damaged blades, reprofiling, serrations, or tip repair may require additional time. Turnaround will be discussed during the drop-off consultation.

Next Day Sharp

Rush service may be available on a case-by-case basis when scheduling allows and may require an additional rush fee. Availability is not guaranteed and must be confirmed before drop-off.

Before Drop-Off

Safe Transport

Please transport knives safely and securely. Blade guards, towels, cardboard sleeves, or secure wrapping are recommended for drop-off and pick-up.

This helps protect the blades, the customer, and the sharpening process from avoidable damage or injury.

Core Services

Edge Inspection & Service Recommendation

Every knife is inspected before sharpening to evaluate edge damage, bevel condition, tip condition, rust or corrosion, blade geometry, and the appropriate sharpening angle for the knife’s intended use.

This inspection helps determine which sharpening service is best suited for your knife, and whether any additional correction or repair services are recommended.

Inspection is included with every sharpening service.

Standard Edge

Starting at $15

600–800 grit

For kitchen knives, pocket knives, work knives, utility knives, and general EDC knives.

Blades are sharpened through a Wicked Edge stone progression to approximately 600–800 grit and matched as closely as practical to the existing factory angle, or restored to a balanced 50/50 working edge when appropriate. Minor bevel cleanup is included.

This leaves an aggressive, sharp, practical working edge with good bite for everyday kitchen use, EDC tasks, utility work, and general cutting.

Precision Edge

Starting at $25

1600–2000 grit

For quality kitchen knives, higher-end EDC knives, hunting knives, and customers seeking a more refined finish than the Standard Edge.

Blades are sharpened through a finer Wicked Edge stone progression to approximately 1600–2000 grit and matched as closely as practical to the existing factory angle, or restored to a balanced 50/50 working edge with additional attention to angle consistency, bevel appearance, and edge refinement.

This produces a very sharp, cleaner-feeling edge with a more refined bevel finish than standard sharpening. The bevel may begin to show a polished, light-reflective appearance depending on the blade steel and existing condition.

For EDC and folding knives, Precision Edge service includes lubrication of accessible moving parts and a function check. Disassembly is not included unless specifically offered.

Precision Plus Edge

Starting at $35

Up to 2200 grit + ceramic + strop

For premium knives, higher-end folders, nicer kitchen knives, sentimental blades, or customers who want extra refinement beyond normal sharpening.

Blades are sharpened through a finer Wicked Edge stone progression up to approximately 2200 grit, refined with ceramic finishing tools, and finished using Wicked Edge leather strops with micronized diamond paste.

This service focuses on a more refined edge, improved bevel consistency, and a noticeably more polished bevel surface. When appropriate, the edge can be set to a documented balanced 50/50 profile using digital angle verification.

For EDC and folding knives, Precision Plus service includes lubrication of accessible moving parts and a function check. Disassembly is not included unless specifically offered.

Quick Reference

Pricing

Prices are listed as starting prices. Final pricing may vary based on blade size, steel type, edge condition, unusual blade shape, serrations, tip damage, chips, reprofiling, or other corrective work. Larger blades, high-performance steels, and combination plain-edge/serrated blades may require additional time and will be quoted after inspection.

Kitchen Knife Set Packages

Quoted after inspection. Discounted package pricing may be available for multiple kitchen knives dropped off together. Damage correction, serrations, broken tips, and reprofiling are quoted separately.

Correction Work

Repairs & Add-Ons

Blade Edge Reprofiling

Quoted after inspection

Used when the sharpening angle needs to change, the bevel is significantly uneven, or the edge requires more correction than normal sharpening.

Minor Chip & Roll Repair

Quoted after inspection

Minor chips, rolls, or flattened spots may be corrected during sharpening when they do not require major material removal.

Tip Repair

Quoted after inspection

Minor tip repair may be available when the point is chipped, rounded, or lightly damaged. Major reshaping is quoted separately.

Serrated Edge Touch-Up

Quoted after inspection

Light serration touch-up may be available when the serration pattern allows. Heavy or unusual serration repair may be declined or quoted separately.

Final Hand-Stropped Finish

$5–$10 Add-On

A final leather paddle-strop refinement may be added after sharpening to further clean up the apex, remove remaining burr, and improve cutting smoothness.

Best suited for kitchen knives, EDC knives, and blades where a cleaner finished edge is desired.

Available as an add-on to Standard Edge, Precision Edge, or Precision Plus Edge. Final price depends on blade size, steel type, and the amount of additional refinement needed.

EDC Knife Tune-Up

Starting at $10–$15

Visual and function check of folding knives, including visible hardware condition, blade play, lockup concerns, centering observation, and obvious safety issues.

Accessible moving components may be cleaned and lubricated where appropriate. Visible hardware is checked and tightened where appropriate.

Blade play, centering, and action may be adjusted within safe functional limits and as close as practical to the customer’s preference.

Disassembly is not included unless specifically offered.

Service Limits

Ace of Blades may decline service on knives that are unsafe, excessively damaged, heavily corroded, poorly constructed, or not suitable for the requested work.

Tools & Approach

Carefully Controlled Results

Ace of Blades uses a Wicked Edge precision guided sharpening system along with quality abrasives, ceramic finishing tools, leather strops with micronized diamond paste, lubricants, and protective products to deliver consistent, carefully controlled results.

The approach is slow, deliberate, and detail-focused. Each knife is treated as its own project, with attention given to the blade’s condition, steel type, edge geometry, intended use, and the level of refinement requested. The goal is not to remove unnecessary steel or rush through a blade, but to restore a clean, practical edge that fits how the knife will actually be used.

When appropriate, bevel angles are verified with a digital angle gauge to help maintain clean, repeatable edge geometry.

Edge condition and bevel quality may be inspected under lighted magnification during evaluation and final quality control.

About

About Ace of Blades

Bryan Avery holding his daughter outdoors

Ace of Blades is a small-batch knife sharpening service operated by Bryan Avery in the Fuquay-Varina, NC area.

Bryan is a husband, father, and longtime pocket knife carrier with more than 25 years of experience keeping a blade close at hand. Like a lot of good habits, it started simple — basic sharpening gear, a few personal knives, and the slow realization that a dull knife is both annoying and mildly offensive.

Over time, that interest grew into higher-quality knives, harder-to-sharpen steels, better equipment, and a deeper respect for the difference between “sharp enough” and done right. After years of sharpening knives for friends and family, Bryan invested in a professional-quality sharpening system to offer careful, consistent service to more people.

Ace of Blades is built around a detail-oriented, quality-first approach. Every knife is treated like its own project, whether it is a kitchen knife, work blade, hunting knife, or favorite EDC. The goal is simple: clean bevels, practical performance, honest communication, and no rushed, one-size-fits-all sharpening.
